Earth Day on the St. Jones River
Saturday, April 22, 2006, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
(Rain Date: Saturday, April 29)
 |
You are invited to join Kent County Levy Court
for its 11th annual Earth Day observance. Volunteers are needed
for a St. Jones River Clean-Up and Shoreline Tree Planting
Project. Families, individuals, groups, and organizations are
invited to help the Kent County Department of Community Services
conduct its first River Clean-Up at the New Hunn Recreation and
Conservation Area on the St. Jones River near Lebanon Landing.
Earth Day Volunteers are also needed to help plant 20 Native
Trees and remove litter and debris at the Lebanon Landing
Recreation Area at the same time as the River Clean-Up.
The Hunn Recreation and Conservation Area and the Lebanon
Landing Recreation Area are both located on Sorghum Mill Road,
south of Route 10, along the St. Jones River (see map).
Please wear hard-soled, lace-up shoes or boots (no sneakers,
please) and bring work gloves. If you are volunteering to plant
trees, bring a round-point shovel, if available. Dress
appropriately for outdoor work. A handicapped-accessible
restroom, hot and cold drinks, and snacks will be provided.
To register as a volunteer and for more information, e-mail
Glenn “Wayne” McCarty, Kent County Division of Parks, at
wayne.mccarty@co.kent.de.us or call 302-744-2489. Volunteers may
also register on the day of the event at the Hunn Recreation and
Conservation Area project site. All registered volunteers will
receive a certificate of appreciation and possibly other
appreciation gifts (sponsors pending and welcomed).
This St. Jones River Planting and Clean-Up project is a
continuation of Kent County’s commitment to community
volunteerism on the national anniversary of Earth Day 1970. The
2006 event is funded by the Kent County Levy Court and
co-sponsored by the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve
(St. Jones Reserve), the St. Jones Greenway Commission, the
First State Resource Conservation & Development Council, and the
USDA Earth Team.
The First State RC&D Council and the USDA Earth Team are equal
opportunity providers and employers.
