Subject: More than two million available to protect Delaware’s agricultural
lands
The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has more than $2
million in available funds to protect Delaware’s agricultural lands through the
Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP). The Delaware NRCS State Office
is seeking proposals for FRPP from state, federally recognized tribal and local
governments, and non-governmental organizations that are interested in working
together to acquire conservation easements on farms and ranches. Individual
landowners are not eligible to apply for these funds, but can work through a
local government or organizational groups to submit a proposal. The NRCS State
Offices must receive proposals by 5:00 p.m. EDT on May 11, 2006. NRCS is
expected to announce final project selections in June.
FRPP protects agricultural land by purchasing conservation easements, which
limits conversion of agricultural lands for non-agricultural uses. NRCS
partners with tribal, local governments, and non-government organizations to
acquire easements. Since 1996, more than 277,811 acres of farm and ranch land
are now protected in 43 states through FRPP. USDA provides up to 50 percent of
the appraised fair market value of the conservation easement. The remaining 50
percent is matched by state and local entities, which can including the use of
landowner donations.
For more information on FRPP and proposal submission, please contact Paul
Petrichenko at 302-678-4180. For more information about the NRCS, please contact
